So this is the fist review/opinion post about systems in general. I will start of with one of the two we have used the most:
Company: White Wolf
System: World of Darkness
Version: ‘New’ (2.0)
Review: Good for beginner and experienced players
World of Darkness has a unique tree of systems. A core rule set applies to all of the expanded games. By itself, the core system is made to create the normal world of Today. Granted they have an entire rulebook for weapons and combat tools, the setup is used to make humans in the current times. If you wanted to, you could create a group of humans and role play every day life. But who signed up for that? What we want is a bit of action, mystery and story.
White Wolf was genius in creating the character sheets and dice system. You only have to use d10′s and a successful roll is on a 8, 9, or 0 (10). The number of dice you roll for an action is determined by a bunch of factors, mostly how many dots you have on your sheet. The sheet is just a big 8.5×11 scan-tron. With easy rules on how to fill it in when you make your character. Simple, effective and allows you to get on to the role playing.
Overall, this is a good system for people role playing for the first time to expert players. While the base rules are simple, it leaves it open to each of the expansions. Each sub-system exists in the same world as the rest. So you can mix and blend them to make an endless verity of stories and unique worlds.
The current sub-systems are:
Vampire: The Requiem – Vampires, Ghouls and Politics.
Werewolf: The Forsaken – Wolves, Spirits and Territories.
Mage: The Awakening – Magic, Change Reality and Paradox.
Promethean: The Created – Frankenstein, Outcast and Pinocchio.
Changeling: The Lost – Sprites, Emotion Feeder and Elementals.
Hunter: The Vigil – Vengeance, Kill Supernatural and Still Human.
Geist: The Sin-Eaters – (was just released) Possesion
