So one of the main obstacles for most gamers is just finding a good group or even just a group to play with. I personally got lucky and had a group of friends that played RPG’s since I started in high school. But I have heard comments online about ‘I just can’t find a group or I would play’. Well here are a few tools to help you out on that.
Game Database sites are just a hosted Classifieds section just for RPG games. There are only three sites that I could easily find that currently do this. Each is driven by the people who post games there so I encourage players and groups to post at least one of these sites. The only drawback is they usually search by location and there isn’t any place for online text RPG’s.
White Wolf Official Group Finder
This is a really good resource if you want to play a White Wolf game. There is a decent search engine based on City name that you can use. It gives a Name, Post Date, City, and a description on whatever the poster typed.
RPG Game Find
This is a generic site that covers not only RPG games but Fantasy Card games too (aka Magic the Gathering and so on). Though the subsection of games is broad catagories, you can search by your zip code and miles away from you. This makes finding games nearby really easy.
RPG Registry
While the other two sites has an easy to use by location search. This one is just a generic registry of players and games. Sure it does have a lot more specific game types but its not so easy to use. Though I do like the idea of having more specific game types or at least tags so people can look for specific games.
If none of these work for you in finding a local group, I suggest joining a gaming community. These can be more hidden or private groups that you can be invited to or public forums (or image boards) where you can meet people and talk about RPG’s. The more common is the System Forums (aka White Wolf or DnD website’s forums). Hopefully one of these helps you find a group to play with.
when it comes to online text roleplaying games, I just go to RPoL.net…
