DnD 4Ed – Mark of Storm

Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition Eberon Players Guide has a set of feats called Marks.  They give specific bonuses to different class features along with access to Rituals (that you normally wouldn’t have unless you are a spellcaster).  One in particular has caught more attention than the rest, Mark of Storm.

This Mark is beneficial to any class that uses Thunder or Lightning powers, preferably At-will.  Whenever you Hit (keyword) with a power with the Lightning or Thunder keywords, you get to Shift them 1 square.  A side ability is that you can fly farther in a turn (if/when you can fly).  But mostly it’s the shifting part that makes it important.  This is a big benefit to your powers, giving you the tactical control of moving enemies around the field the way you want.  I have been in the Striker role for our group and plan on using this for a Storm Sorcerer and a Thunderborn Wrath Barbarian.

The sorcerer has a lot of thunder/lightning spells between the Players Handbook 2 and Arcane Power books.  The specialty into the Storm background will even help reduce resistances to these spells as well.  An at-will power lets me hit 2 enemies and so I can shift them both.  Another lets me shift 1 myself and hit 1 enemy (+shift him).   Encounter/Daily/Utility powers only enhance or further focus on taking down or moving people around.

The Barbarian is simply a decent damage and support setup.  The at-will lets me hit a target then yell infront of my character to deal thunder damage (+ shift each one hit).  Other abilities are focused on getting temporary hit points or combo with the Rage powers.  A decent mix of tactics, damage and tanking.

One of the best defensive maneuvers I you can do with this Mark setup is a Ready Action.  Just setup a power + conditional trigger and you have a nasty interrupt to an enemies actions.  Say an enemy move up to my Sorcerer to attack him.  I had used my Standard Action to setup the Ready Action for just this case.  I activate Storm Walk, shifting back 1 away from him as well as hit him (or his friend) with the damage which itself will shift the enemy 1 space.  Now it has to make another move action to even get in range to attack.  At that point it has run out of actions and I am safe.

Have fun and don’t get shocked yourself!
