Beast Ranger – Defensive Striker

Sorry for the delay in the Character Spree, I have been a bit busy.  Here is the continuation of the DnD 4th Ed seriese of characters:

System: DnD 4.0
Class: Ranger
Level of Build: 7
Books Required: Players Handbook, Martial Power, Eberron Player’s Guide
Build Requirements: Feats – Beast Protector, Mark of the Sentinel
Example Character Sheet: Scar the Unshaken and Lizzy the Lizard

When all the expansion books came out, they each gave some nifty new class features.  Rangers seemed to have gotten the shorter end of the stick combat wise with the Beast Companion.  A lot of the limitations really hinder the ability of this class from being a Striker to being a more out of combat support character.  Being the person I am, I took this as a challenge rather than just shake my head it it.

The focus of this is Opportunity Attacks, Defense and Mobility.  I would love to use a line of these as NPCs defending a castle or on the battlefield.  The feat Beast Protector allows you to make an Opportunity Attack against a target that attacks your Beast Companion.  Combining that with Mark of the Sentinel which allows you to shift before or after Opp Attacks on top of a Total Defense action makes you more a mobile Sentry.

Total Defense normally only gets you +2, but the beast companion features lets you get a +3 to both you and your Beast as long as your next to each other.  Then take into account a Defensive weapon and a Companion slot item, you can really stack it up.  In this case, the character goes from the normal 22 AC to 27 AC while the pet goes from 22 AC to 26.

This is a highly Defensive build that still allows a decent amount of damage to be sent out among enemies.  While not so focus fired as most strikers, with a good round you can get attacks against multiple enemies.  When your not being attacked, you can use Encounter and Daily powers to make them regret it.  Besides just dolling out the damage, those abilities also let you hinder your opponents movements.  Making a well rounded character to support a group with.
